Red Sea Governorate is one of the
governorates of
Egypt. Located between the
Nile and the
Red Sea in the southeast of the country, its southern border
forms part of
Egypt
's border with
Sudan. It consists of its
capital the city of
Hurghada in addition to 5 other cities (Ras Ghareb – Safaga –
Qusier – Marsa Alam – Shalatin)

The Red Sea Governorate is bordered on the north by the
Suez Governorate, to the east by the Red Sea, and to the west
by the governorates of
Aswan,
Qena,
Sohag,
Asyut,
al-Minya and
Beni Suef. In the south it is bordered

Population

The population of Red Sea Governorate was 288,233 inhabitants (according
to the latest census in 2006), of which more than 275,000 lived in a few
towns along the coast. Historically, the population since 1937 was as

Economic activities |
|
Red Sea Governorate has a wonderful coast
that is a very important tourist element. Since the early 80s, Hurghada
has been a popular destination for beach lovers and scuba divers.
Tourism is also growing in the southern cities of
Al-Qusair,
Safaga and
Marsa Alam. In addition to the
numerous hotels and tourist establishments in the centers are located in
the governorate, 2 official nature reserves are to be developed for
tourism, The Wadi al-Gamal National Park (Valley of the camels) near the
town of
Marsa Alam
and the
Gebel
Elba
National Park
near the city of
Hala'ib
.

Besides a strong tourism industry, there is
also a large offshore fishing industry. The area, which extends over the
governorate is rich in minerals, such as in phosphates. The
Ras Gharib
contains 70% of Egypt's oil production. |

In the city of
Marsa
Alam
there is a new gold mine called Al-Sukkary
within a 160 sq km license area for the Project which is expected to
mine 142 Mt. |
